A visit to Zanzibar is not compete without seeing one of the rarest monkeys in Africa, with less than 2000 remaining in the world. The Zanzibar Red Colobus is recognized as a separate species (Piliocolobus kirkii) and is said to be endemic to Zanzibar.
The Jozani Forest Tour will take you to the forest 38km southeast from Stone Town. Its about a 20min drive from Stone Town, it contains about 100 tree species from a total of 43 families. The forest has over 2,512ha that includes the whole ground water forest, coral rag forest & salt marsh area.
In 1995, the Jozani Chwaka Bay Conservation Project was set up and now the local communities are involved in the project. Some of your entrance fee contributes to development projects and to compensate local farmers whose crops are often damaged by the red colobus monkeys.
